With the close of my original poll, several couples were tied. So it’s time for a runoff between them to fill in the number 3 to number 10 spots (the others will be given honorable mentions). Vote!

I have tumblr devoted to Disney (Shameless plug: It’s here). I want to find the Top 10 Disney Romances and have turned to the internet for help. Until Oct. 1st, you can vote here.

I addressed beta readers in my last post. I thought I would expand a bit. Because I was thinking about it—as I said, most people don’t know the areas they need improvement in. So here’s a guide to help you!

Beta readers.

If you write fanfiction, someone may have suggested getting a “beta.” If you read it, you may have seen someone thank their “beta.” Have you ever wondered what that is? Well, I’ll tell you.

I give. I was hoping the popularity surrounding this would die down quickly, but it seems to be everywhere.

There are different lengths to fanfictions. Today, we are going to focus on the longer stories—multi-chaptered stories. Namely, a problem common to them. What is this problem?

Filler.

Alright, let’s face it: Most fanfictions involve an original character being inserted into the original plot. Some of them are fantastic. Most aren’t.

Why?

One of the many reasons is that these new characters don’t mesh well with the original plot. The writers don’t think how this new presence changes the story. They just give other characters’ actions or dialogue to this new character without understanding them.

Ever watch a TV show or a movie? Ever notice someone’s shirt changing between shots? Or the show calls back to something that happened earlier in the series? That’s called “continuity.”

“How I Met Your Mother” is very good with it. They go to the point that if they have to go back in time for a reason, they make sure to match Alyson Hannigan’s hair color (it’s been various shades of red throughout the seasons). In the episode “Slapsgiving,” a continuity mistake was noticed and posted about within minutes of the scene airing. The wrong slap was shown in the progression of slaps (the one in MacLaren’s in place of the correct first slap in Ted and Marshall’s apartment). The showrunners apologized and corrected it for subsequent broadcasts.
